Pall Corporation | Trace Moisture Sensor – PICO1000 Ultra-Pure Gas Analyzer
For the PICO1000 Trace Moisture Sensor, a breakthrough ultra-pure gas analyzer capable of detecting H₂O molecules at parts-per-billion levels, I served as the UX Research and Design lead for the product’s end-to-end user experience. Originally engaged to create a Quick Start Guide, my role rapidly expanded into directing and designing the complete Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE)—including packaging and promotion, safety labeling, user documentation, and consultation on the graphical user interface.
This work followed Pall’s acquisition of Boston-based BMS in 2013, whose technology fundamentally disrupted the nano-detection market. Unlike competing systems that required weeks to install, the PICO1000 could be transported and operational within minutes—introducing both opportunity and risk. Operators needed to understand entirely new parameters and mental models for detecting trace moisture in continuous gas streams, making usability, clarity, and education critical to product adoption.
My contributions focused on translating complex scientific capabilities into intuitive workflows and clear communication. I designed the Quick Start Guide, Instructions for Use (IFU), and extended User Guide to support safe installation, calibration, and operation, while reducing onboarding time and setup errors. I also led the design of product packaging, safety and connection labeling, and promotional photography, ensuring consistency across technical, regulatory, and marketing touchpoints. As a GUI consultant, I helped define primary workflows and status displays that conveyed system health and measurement confidence at a glance.
The result was a cohesive, user-centered product experience that supported rapid deployment, accurate operation, and confident adoption of a category-defining instrument—reinforcing Pall’s leadership in ultra-pure gas analysis.
