Pocket Video Cameras

Objective: Create best in class, and set the standard for interaction patterns with personalized video cameras. Initial/First Time Use was a critical factor for success, allowing exploration of higher functions as experience and comfort grew. Concept solutions for feedback on early models to influence cyclical product lifecycles. Influenced the Harmonized aspects of marketings, packaging, Industrial Design, Graphics and Usability for featured product launches. Documented interaction patterns that established an architecture to enable future features and capabilities.

One of the most meaningful 0→1 experiences I worked on was this product launch a product that fundamentally rethought how consumers captured moments. At the time, digital cameras were still primarily photo-first devices. The problem we set out to solve was clear: as video sharing and storytelling became more important

I was part of the core UX and human factors team responsible for defining the interaction model from the ground up. We started with ethnographic research and in-context usability testing to understand how people naturally captured and shared moments. One key insight emerged early: users didn’t think in terms of “photo vs. video”—they thought in terms of capturing experiences in real time. That insight led to a bold product decision: make video the default capture mode, a first for Kodak.

The impact was significant. The DVC not only earned industry recognition, including Popular Mechanics “Best in Class,” but also helped reposition Kodak as an innovator in digital capture during a critical market transition. More importantly, it demonstrated how deeply understanding user behavior could challenge entrenched assumptions and lead to a fundamentally better product experience.

This project stands out because it wasn’t just designing an interface—it was shaping a new product category and influencing how people interact with digital media.
